Here are the most interesting items we saw in women’s health this week:
🏥 52 MATERNITY WARDS DOWN, AND THE CUTS HAVEN'T FULLY HIT. Fifty-two maternity wards have already closed since Medicaid funding cuts were signed into law, with eight more announced — and the bill doesn't fully take effect until next year.
📈 MENOPAUSE IS A CLIFF, NOT A SLOPE. A million-woman analysis in Nature Medicine found that more than half of health markers shift abruptly around the final menstrual period — bone, liver, kidney, cholesterol — not gradually. Women on HRT showed smaller shifts.
⚖️ SHE'S SUING ANTI-ABORTION ACTIVISTS UNDER THEIR OWN PILL LAW. A Texas mother used the state's HB 7 to sue Students for Life leaders who allegedly ordered abortion medication on their phones outside Space Center Houston — and is seeking $459,782, the average cost of raising two children in Texas.
